This book, Smoke Screen, is the third in this miniseries by Stephanie Newton. It is also her third book for Steeple Hill. Perfect Target and Moving Target are the first two books in the series.
Jake wasn’t a firefighter any more. An injury had put an end to his career. But he had come to terms with that, and under God’s direction was now the pastor of a local church, and the chaplain of his former firefighting unit.
Why are all these things suddenly starting to happen to and around him? It’s been years since his fiancée died in a fire, and now someone else he knows dies in the same way. The fire inspector thinks both fires are aimed at Jake, because of the things they found inside the burned buildings. Enter Chloe. She is a trained undercover investigator with the FBI.
It doesn’t matter what they come up with, their arsonist seems to be one jump ahead of them, and now Chloe’s life is in danger. What simple action on Jake’s part finally blows everything wide open? Why are they shocked that the arsonist was so close all this time?
Stephanie writes with the action and gusto of a seasoned writer. From the first two sentences she had me hooked. Her stories flow seamlessly from one scene to the next. The story evolves as a story should, leading the reader on from one climactic sequence to the next.
It is obvious that Stephanie has found her niche. Her stories can hold your attention like very little else can. Even though this story is part of a miniseries, it can very easily stand on it’s own, though my suggestion would be to also try and find the first two books, because once you read this one, you aren’t going to want to miss anything this author writes.
